The Art of Light
Digital Photography
In this series of photographs, the artist explores the interplay of artificial and natural light through a variety of settings. The presence of various modes of transportation throughout the collection is a metaphorical representation of the journey that light takes him on as he seeks to encounter the truth about the objects around him. Without the use of artificial light in the series of photos of the car, there is almost no information for the eyes save for the lighting endemic to the car itself. In later photographs, the element of time is introduced to the photographs as the artist begins to use long shutter speeds anchored in place by a tripod. Whereas in other photographs the lighting available seemed to represent absence, here, the lighting itself is morphed into another image of its own as the artist reveals a ghostly road encircled by the red beams formed by taillights. These long-shutter-speed photographs are much like a repeated series of the same object in motion. Similarly, the portraits of the woman explore this idea of repetition endeavoring to find failure in the reproducibility of expression, emotion, and light. The final photograph, taken at dusk, is an accidental snap in juxtaposition with the posed nature of the repeated photographs. The addition of grain to the photo implies the imperfect quality of memory alongside the darkness of the silhouetted figure. The artists decision to tell the story in such a format was solely based on the emotions and experiences he encountered throughout his journey.
